Are You Certified in Another State, But Want to Teach in Texas?
Are you planning to move to Texas and get a teaching job? If you are certified in another state, the information below will help you as you plan your relocation.
You may already know that Texas's economy is consistently outpacing the national economy. In addition, the cost of living is lower than the national average.
The Texas Legislature is also restoring billions of dollars to education. All indicators forecast a great hiring season for teachers, so this is a great time to be a teacher in Texas.
If you are certified in another state, it is possible to get a Texas Standard Certificate without going through an educator preparation program. You might even be exempt from taking TExES exams.
How Do I Get Started?
1. Create an account with TEA.
2. Pay a $180 fee (non-refundable).
3. Submit all official transcripts for college courses.
4. Submit your certificate(s).
What's Next?
The Texas Education Agency will review your credentials. If you are eligible, you will be granted a one year non-renewable certificate. During that year you will need to complete any remaining requirements.
After one year of teaching and completing any requirements, you apply for your Standard Certificate. Your Standard Certificate is valid for five years and is renewable.
Good News
You can apply to have your out of state teaching exam(s) reviewed, and the Texas Education Agency will determine if you can be exempt from your TExES exam(s). For your convenience, TEA has a list of comparable exams.
