How Much Money Will I Make as a Teacher?
Great question! The state of Texas sets a minimum salary for teachers, but each district decides how much to compensate educators. Although the state mandated minimum salary is currently $27,320 per year, most districts pay significantly more than that. Almost all school districts post their teacher salary schedule online. The average starting salary for new teachers in Texas is $43,000 per year. Since each district establishes its own pay scale, sometimes neighboring towns can have annual salaries that vary by a few thousand dollars.
How Can I Earn More?
Most districts increase the salary for teachers who earn a Master's degree in their field. Some districts also offer stipends for critical needs teachers, usually for Secondary Math and Science, Special Education, Bilingual Education, and sometimes ESL. Coaches usually earn a stipend, and sometimes band teachers, yearbook or newspaper coordinators, or other teachers that will be working longer hours due to after school commitments. You will also earn raises according to your years of experience.
