Student Loan Forgiveness for Teachers

Student Loan Forgiveness

Did you know that by teaching in Texas you could have up to $17,500 of your student loans forgiven?

You can qualify by teaching at certain approved low income schools.

Another way to qualify is by teaching a critical shortage subject.  This year, the Department of Education released the critical shortage areas:

1. Bilingual/English as a Second Language
2.Computer Science
3. Languages Other Than English (Foreign Languages)
4. Mathematics
5. Science
6. Special Education

You have to teach 5 years to earn the full benefits.  During the first and second years, 15% of your loan amount is forgiven.  Then, during the third and fourth years, 20% of your loan amount is forgiven.  During the final year, the remaining 30% is forgive.  The total loan amount that can be forgiven is $17,500.

For more information, visit the TEA link on loan forgiveness, or the federal website about teacher loan forgiveness.
