Strategies

• Reading comprehension is one of the primary reasons people struggle on standardized tests. If you know you are weak in reading comprehension or taking standardized tests, look up free resources online to improve your reading comprehension, or take a class at a community college or community center.
• This sounds basic and is not news, but read each question CAREFULLY. Read the question, each answer, and then re-read the question before selecting your answer.
• Even if you feel certain the correct answer is option B, read through all four options, and read the question twice before you select your answer.
• Look for words such as ALL, NONE, EXCEPT, BUT, ALWAYS, NEVER that affect the meaning of the sentence. Overlooking one simple word can cause you to misunderstand the question and answer it incorrectly!
• For situational questions, choose the answer that is most LEARNER-CENTERED. Learner-centered activities and assessments are focused on the individual needs of the students. Our sample tests for sale at this site include situational questions.
• If you have it narrowed down to two options that are both learner-centered or both seem correct, choose the one that is most THOROUGH.
• Be sure the answer you select FULLY ADDRESSES THE QUESTION. Choosing an answer that does not fully address the question is one of the most common mistakes people make.

Also, Google "released STAAR tests" and take those for Grades 3 through 8. This is not a way to study, but instead is a way to assess your knowledge. When you miss questions, look up more information about those topics or concepts. For Math problems you miss, use sources like Khan Academy to do more practice on those types of Math questions.

Finally, this is a long, challenging test. Study hard for at least a few weeks, and sleep well before your test. Since the test lasts about 5 hours, make sure you eat a healthy meal before you go. Save the donuts for after the exam! =)
